Comparison of Music Video
Do you think you have created a successful music video why?
I feel that the music video in which we created was successful as it conformed to the Indie genre and entertained our specific target audience of females between the ages of 16-25. We can understand that our music video was received positively due to the feedback that came back to us. I feel that, as a group, we followed the brief which was to create a music video and two ancillary products in order to promote the media product in which we had created. In order to create a successful media product it is the job of the group to choose a target audience in which they will intend to appeal to as well as gaining a wider audience. An audience is very important as this will allow a record company to produce more sales through the way in which the music video is played on various music channels and also through the ancillary products such as CD's and posters. The members of my group included myself, Daisy Morecroft, Emma Harris and Ella Sutherland. W e worked together in order to choose an artist in which we would focus on and use one of their songs for our music video. The artist that we chose was Nina Nesbitt and the song we chose of hers was 'Noserings and Shoestrings'.
I feel that we made a great effort in order to conform to the Indie genre by including naturalistic lighting, performance based production, quirky clothing , low budget setting and other elements that will identify the video as an Indie music video. The ancillary pack follows suit with the music video which shows competency and the ability to follow themes and genre in order to appeal to a certain music genre.
Which micro element, best shows your creativity and understanding
of your music genre the most?
I feel that the choice of lighting and colour throughout the music video conformed to the Indie genre and made an effective viewing.
For majority of our music video used natural light as it is conventional of an indie music video as the central focus is the sound of music rather the mise en scene.
In a certain scene we have chosen to locate in a forest at sunset therefore the light will be natural and therefore will portray a calm and relaxing atmosphere which we want as this scene will be where our artist has her thinking time about the situation with her boyfriend. The lighting will was warm and at sunset in order to show how that when the artist is in her thinking place she feels safe and stable compared to when she is with her boyfriend at the moment.
Typically Indie music videos have little effects and natural light as they are known for their low-budget and simple videos as they are mainly focused on the music and the sound.
For one of our scenes where the two characters are playing with sparklers and watching fireworks at night time we used a flash light in order to be able to see our characters against the natural night time light. We felt that the small light of the sparklers will connote the small hope they have for their relationship to get back on track.
We broke the conventions of an Indie music genre by contrasting lighting with the use of fireworks which will connote the chaotic and overwhelming relationship the couple have. Also the lighter which he will use which will show how he is rebellious and enjoys an unpredictable lifestyle.
We aimed to create a relationship between the artist and the audience as we hope that the lighting and colours will symbolise the hidden meaning of the song which for our target audience of young girls will entice them. As our audience are young women they will be able to connect with the feelings of being confused about a love interest and will be able to empathise with the artist consequently building a relationship also.
We are going to use the colour red continuously throughout our music video. The colour red will show how the running theme throughout the music video is love and danger which is a juxtaposition. We intend to have a red flare which will enable red smoke which connotes mystery and danger. Furthermore we will also have fireworks and sparklers that will show a red flicker of light. The fireworks will also show the chaotic element of the unstable relationship that they have. The relationship is seen to be a loving but argumentative and poisonous relationship. This is due to the artist's love interest to be influenced by alcohol and drugs. The artist will also wear red lipstick which will show that she is central to the events and she is involved within the danger.

Ed Sheeran - Lego House
Daisy - Noerings and Shoestrings
Lego House is a song by singer-songwriter Ed Sheeran who is commonly known as an artist of the Indie music genre as well as our own Artist Daisy. The music video features Harry Potter star Rupert Grint, as a play on their similar appearance.
Both Music videos are similar in the way the artist's are dressed as they are both seen in quirky and casual clothing showing the lack of importance of appearance and showing the central focus of the music and the sound. Both artist's hair is tousled and un-styled showing their messy and imperfect style which is conventional of the Indie genre as the music is generally seen as raw, acoustic and unedited in comparison to dance music which has been modified to create a specific sound. Our artist is seen in a denim shirt which shows a laid-back attitude towards life, similarly the artist in Lego house also follows the casual theme wearing a red hoody. The colour red is evident in both videos, as Daisy wears red lipstick, showing passion within both videos and their lyrics.
Lego House uses a mixture of low-budget and high budget settings whereas we have just used low-budget settings in order to conform to the indie genre. Settings such as fields and bedrooms are easily accessible and will draw an audience into focusing on the artist's thoughts and feelings rather than the different settings. Open areas such as natural fields and forests in which both videos have used, show a place where the artist can reflect on their life and think. In a music video this is effective for an audience as it creates a relationship between the artist and the audience as they will empathise with them. Both artist's are seen to be holding guitar's for many scenes within the music videos which is conventional to the Indie genre as their passion for music would have generally stemmed from a love for an instrument. It is also conventional as music within the Indie genre usually use live instruments and their voices to create sounds. An audience will appreciate the guitar as it shows the artist's musical talents and the fact that both artist's are responsible for the sound of both songs, this increases the entertainment factor.
There is a similarity in lighting which is conventional of the Indie genre as certain lighting portrays emotions that are common within the Indie genre. For example naturalistic lighting is used in both videos in order to show the reality of the narratives and also to portray the artist's reflecting on their certain problems. In Lego house the natural lighting is bright in order to show the enlightenment that the artist is seeing due to finding his strength to perform. Whereas the naturalistic lighting in Nose rings and shoestrings is warm and dull showing how the artist Daisy is reflecting on a chaotic and problematic relationship.
There is a very similar element within the narrative of both videos. There is a destruction of a guitar which shows a loss of control and the way anger has filled the characters due to certain problems that they experience. The artist in lego house destroys his guitar as he has come to the realisation that he is not Ed Sheeran and his loss of identity has a great impact on him. Therefore he smashes the guitar to remove any memory of performing and singing. In comparision to this the guitar is smashed in our music video by the boyfriend of the artist as he is jealous of her love for music and feels that she does not spend enough time with him. The way in which the artist's and characters react to the instruments show that they are personified showing that music is a vital and important part of the artist's life.

Evaluation Question 1
The main purpose of a music video is to represent an artist and create a sequence which evokes specific emotions and narratives. The brief in which we were given was to create a music video and two ancillary products in order to promote the media product in which we had created. The role I adopted within the group was director and occasional camera operator. A director occupies a key position in upper management and works to organise the schedule and overall process of the making of the music video. A director will oversee and manage all functions in a specific area or department. I planned filming schedules and any meetings that we needed to have throughout the months of planning and creating. From my director role I learned exceptional leadership skills, managerial experience and be able to set business targets, time lines, plans and financial targets.
The jobs I adopted when I was camera operating included assembling, preparing and setting up equipment prior to filming, which included tripods and cables. I also offered advice on how best to shoot a scene, explaining the visual impact created by particular shots. From this I learned how to use certain equipment at a higher level and also gain more knowledge in how certain camera shots will help the audience gain a deeper understanding into the narrative of the music video.
I feel that my group worked extremely well together as we all were very understanding of each other's views and we all shared the same vision for the final music video. Each member of the group made a great effort to learn how to edit using Final cut therefore we was all able to edit whenever one of us was free. Each member of the group held valuable skills that made the music video process a very successful and enjoyable experience.
I feel that we have made a music video of the Indie genre intended to the target audience of females between the ages of 16-25. Our music video was a successful combination of narrative and performance due to the romantic situation between the artist and her love interest, and the artist singing and playing the guitar. The ancillary products that we created, I feel were also successful because they were eye catching and also showed our artist in the best possible light. We also gave vital and persuasive information in order for onlookers to be interested and then buy the product.
The production brief was to create a music video from a particular genre of your choice and then two ancillary products that will promote the music video. The ancillary products were a digipak and a magazine advert. The purpose of a music video is to promote an artist or song that they have just released which helps to gain more of an understanding about the meaning of the song. Many music videos include narratives that will attract a specific target audience and make the music video memorable. A music video will create a relationship between the artist and the target audience in order to make the artist likeable and more successful. It will also show the audience the personality of the artist. A music video also allows fans to buy into the artists' lifestyle as they may be promoting a specific brand or item in their music video, which would entice a fan to go out and purchase the product this is called intertextual reference.
The style of a music video includes elements of performance, narrative and concept. A performance based music video will include an artist singing or dancing their song through the music video. This evokes a sense of emotion into the music video from the artist themselves. The narrative element would include a story that would run throughout the music video, this creates more of an understanding for the audience and will also make it more memorable. The concept element of a music video presents the audience with an idea or theme that runs throughout the video.
The codes and conventions of a music genre are the factors that make it evident to the audience of the genre of the song they are listening to. Dance music videos include club setting, dancing people, colours and lights. Whereas a pop music video will have a narrative and potentially a love story. It will be bright and may seem 'over the top'.
The indie genre is what we chose to use for our music video. Indie is a short-form of "independence" and is a genre in the music industry.
Indie music originated in the 80's with bands including The Smiths and Joy Division. Indie bands have become increasingly popular in more recent years. The genre is almost a hybrid of Pop and Rock music in terms of the appearance and the music that these musicians play. The style of music you tend to hear in Indie can differ from some artists sounding very clear and using their voice in a more conserved manner such as pop, and I can also be fairly loud and wild, such as rock. The appearance of the artists is also very unique as well and can link in with both how pop and rock are viewed. Unlike rock, Indie artists don't perform very wild or rebellious in their music videos and unlike in pop, they don't perform like they're having the time of their life, but instead they give off a very conservative approach in their performances as if they are just their to sell their music rather than trying to sell themselves. Our finished music video follows the conventions of an Indie music video due to the simplistic setting, priority of music, use of

instruments and quirky image.
We followed the conventions of the Indie genre through a number of ways within the our music video. Firstly we followed the conventions of artist image within an Indie genre.
An artist's image within a music video is important because is allows the audience to visually connect with the artist and it also will determine which genre the music video fits into.
Our artist is going to be perceived as Indie and Diverse as our video is following the conventions of an Indie music video.
We have chosen to have a female artist who dresses in vintage clothes with piercings and messy hair as this shows individuality which follows the Indie conventions as Indie actually means 'Individual'. Also as our target audience is young females who enjoy Indie music we want to influence them in a positive way showing they should embrace individuality and not follow the crowd.

Our artist has blonde hair that is messy and curly which follows the indie conventions as appearance is not vital within a music video within this genre. We intended for the artist to have an effortless look to show her as someone who chooses to lose herself in music rather than face her issues.
. The artist also wears minimal make up of subtle brown and earthy colours with provides the audience with naturalistic visuals. This will provide the audience with a relationship with the artist as she will remind them of a typical teenager and they will see her as a 'friend' they can relate to.
The artist also wears a nose ring which we have used Goodwin's theory of visuals relating to the lyrics as the title of the song is 'noserings and shoestrings'. The nose ring is conventional to the indie genre as piercings are very popular amongst artist's within the Indie genre as they are interested in looking different and also have a rebellious side.
The artist will be seen holding a guitar for many scenes within the music video which is conventional to the Indie genre as their passion for music would have generally stemmed from a love of an instrument. It is also conventional as music within the indie genre usually use many instruments to create their sounds. An audience will also appreciate the guitar as it shows the artist's musical talents and the fact that she is responsible for the sound of the song increasing the entertainment factor.
This is a simple design however the image of the guitar is very conventional to the Indie genre.
Not all of the settings in which we used for our music video followed the Indie genre. The settings that did were the forest and the plain wall. The forest is a natural location of an autumn forest. The lighting is naturalistic as the sun is setting and reflecting on the artist creating a magical effect which represents the location as her 'thinking place' in which she reflects on her life and in this case her failing relationship. This is conventional of the Indie genre as most Indie artist's write their own songs about their own problems therefore showing this thought process is effective.
The colours of orange, brown and yellows are very clear connoting a peaceful atmosphere which is conventional of the Indie genre as the music is generally laid back rather than that of rock and pop which are energetic. The green leaves also show growing, nature, freshness and life which symbolise how certain situations have made the artist grow as a person and she yearns for a relationship without the chaos that it entails at the moment. In this image the artist is sitting on the floor showing she is not afraid of getting dirty which shows her appearance is not vital to her and the music is her main focus.
The location that challenges the conventions of an Indie genre is the Skate Park. This is because the skate park was an urban setting with grey and dark colouring and a lot of graffiti. These type of urban city-like settings are generally seen in music videos of the rap or hip-hop genre. We intended to challenge the Indie genre this way in order to effectively portray the rebellious nature of the antagonists boyfriend. By showing the boyfriend in the urban setting where he is drinking and smoking, this will depict one of his many states of mind, this being his rebellious side. The skate park is seen as the boyfriend's place of escapism under the bad influences in which he throws himself into in order to forget the problems of reality. This setting also shows a contrast between the 'thinking place' of the artist Daisy who is stereotypical of the Indie genre in an autumn forest who is calm and laid back, and her boyfriend who has 'alone time' in the dull and city like skate park.
We have also challenged the Indie Genre by using a 360 camera angle shot which is not usually seen in Indie music videos as they are usually quite simple and basic, this is because most Indie music videos are calm and laidback as they are easy-listening and meant to portray emotion from the artist point of view.
As we intended to show that there are two contrasting characters within our music video, in terms of the boyfriend in the music video we challenged the indie conventions and followed more of a hip-hop vibe in order to connote his rebellious and misguided nature due to his continuous abuse of drink and drugs.
The 360 panning shot showed the skate park and the iconography in which we went for. The shot also shows how we have developed using technology as we have become more creative and advanced with using final cut and also the HD cameras. The panning shot is visually exciting due to the use of blur transitions and a fast forward of 25%. These effects are unconventional of the Indie genre however they do successfully show the difference between the two characters and how their relationship is chaotic and unsuccessful due to these differences.
The jobs I adopted when I was camera operating included assembling, preparing and setting up equipment prior to filming, which included tripods and cables. I also offered advice on how best to shoot a scene, explaining the visual impact created by particular shots. Items used
- Red beanie hat - The red beanie hat is a comfortable item of clothing and will show a laidback attitude of the artist which is conventional to the indie genre as appearance is not the first priority of an indie artist as they are usually laidback and more interested in the music. For example Ellie Goulding always wears a beanie hat to cover her hair unlike Jessie J whose hair is immaculate as she is from the pop genre. The hat also covers messy hair showing the artist is okay with having a 'bad hair day' which shows her as normal and relatable to a female audience. The red colour also connotes passion towards her music which is very conventional of the Indie genre as again music is seen as the most important thing within the music video.
- Floral dress- The floral dress shows the artist likes to stand out however in a feminine and subtle way showing the 'Individuality' of her relating to the chosen genre. The dress is baggy which allows the artist to be comfortable when herself and her love interest are having fun, for example in the scene where they play with sparklers. Artists of the Indie genre are known for getting involved in activities, for example Nina Nesbitt plays in the sea in Brighton in her music video way in the world. She too is seen in comfortable clothes in order to not feel restricted.
- Black tights- The black tights give any outfit that the artist wears an edgy atmosphere showing that she is feminine however she is a strong personality and is not afraid to be different. The tights also cover the artist's legs showing she does not use sexuality to promote her music and her appearance is less important which is conventional to the Indie genre as generally artist's from the genre do not use sexuality within their music videos as they are laid back and promoting the sound rather than themselves.
- Gold and black ankle boots- The black and gold boots create a subtle gothic look showing that the artist s also edgy and confident within herself and her image. The boots are also comfortable shoes rather than heels showing the artist is not high maintenance and is down to earth making her likeable and relatable relating to the Indie genre as they are usually seen in low budget locations such as forests and markets therefore heels would not be suitable.
- Denim shirt- The denim shirt will be worn by the artist in the mid-shot performance scenes. This is a casual look showing the artist can relax, however in these scenes the artist is singing about her boyfriend and the issues she faces with them therefore her outfit is least important in these scenes. The plain T-shirt is conventional to the Indie genre as it draws the attention of the audience away from what she is wearing and to the emotion in which she is singing about and her facial expressions.
- Red lipstick- The red lipstick that the artist wears shows passion and charisma which many Indie artists have for their chosen music. However using the red lipstick may challenge the Indie genre as artist' normally wear minimal make up to draw attention away from their appearance. The artist has strong lips with minimal other make up showing that she has a strong personality. The lipstick also shows an attractive side to the artist making the target audience look up to her.
- Fur coat- The fur coat is a statement item of clothing which is very fashionable at the moment therefore this shows the artist as current and up to date with latest trends and fashion. The coat is also a one off piece showing her individuality
- This will attract the intended target audience as they will enjoy to listen to an artist who is seen as current.

Our artist has blonde hair that is messy and curly which follows the indie conventions as appearance is not vital within a music video within this genre. We intended for the artist to have an effortless look to show her as someone who chooses to lose herself in music rather than face her issues.

The artist will be seen holding a guitar for many scenes within the music video which is conventional to the Indie genre as their passion for music would have generally stemmed from a love of an instrument. It is also conventional as music within the indie genre usually use many instruments to create their sounds.

Evaluation
The main purpose of a music video is to represent an artist and create a sequence which evokes specific emotions and narratives. The brief in which we were given was to create a music video and two ancillary products in order to promote the media product in which we had created.
Our finished music video follows the conventions of an Indie music video due to the simplistic setting, priority of music, use of instruments and quirky image.
In order to create an effective magazine advert, my group and I had to do a lot of research into other artist's from the Indie genre's adverts for inspiration and ideas.
The main two adverts that I analysed and took ideas from was our original artist Nina Nesbitt's tour advert and Ellie Goulding's album advert. I found Nina's appearance in her advert was very fitting for our chosen artist as it connotes the laid back attitude in which we want to show for our artist Daisy. We chose to follow elements of Nina Nesbitt's tour poster as we felt that her she conforms to an Indie artist as she did not have a magazine advert. The poster is created to inform a specific audience about the artist as she is not as well developed within the Indie genre. The audience in which Nina Nesbitt appeals to is a niche audience due to the Indie genre which is generally received by smaller audiences rather than that of the pop and RNB genre who tend to have a more grand audience. A poster has to promote the artist, the genre and the material in which they have recently produced in order to gain sales. Nina Nesbitt's poster shows the Indie genre through the use of costume, surroundings an font. Nina Nesbitt is known for her quirky and indie image which is shown here by her appearance of clothing and makeup. She is also the central focus which shows Goodwin's theory due to the fact that it will create a relationship between the artist and the audience.
She is a teenage girl who is portrayed to be quirky and to have her own individual style. By having a female like this it will attract a target audience of young girls as many try to experiment in their teenage years, especially with fashion.
. The miss-match of her clothing shows that she has pulled the outfit together which shows her laid-back attitude to life which is conventional of the indie genre. She is not concerned with her apparence which may suggest she is more concerned with the music that she is making and performing. The oversized jumper shows that she does not wear clothes to assentuate her figure which is unconventional for many young girls which may suggest that she is not a 'girly girl' which makes her interesting and different. The denim shorts show a casual sense of style and also that she is comfortable with her body and her legs even though very little skin is showing in the advert. This shows how Nina doesn't use sexuality to promote her image which is conventional of the Indie genre as the central focus is the music. As a poster is created to fulfil the purpose of gaining sales we feel that this successful poster of Nina Nesbitt's would be a great model for us to build from.
A digipak that we analysed was from the artist Jack Johnson who is an American folk rock singer-songwriter, surfer, filmmaker, musician known for his work in the soft rock and acoustic genres. The main purpose of a digipak is to entice an audience in order for them to purchase the product in which the artist is a part of. The digipak is personal to the artist including images that represent the artist and their music. Overall a digipak allows the audience to feel more connected with their favoured artist and in turn enjoy their music more because they can relate to it.
A digipak differs to a CD album due to the vast amount of additional images we as a consumer are provided with.A digipak will generally have 6 slides and as a group we will create this and produce a digipak including a front cover, welcome page, cd design, two images and a back page.
The front cover of the digipak shows a large oak tree which are often regarded as wise and humble which may represent the songs within Jack Johnson's album. The front cover is very simplistic with only the tree, the figure representing the artist and also his guitar. The simplicity of the cover is conventional of the indie genre as their music and music videos are generally basic as the main priority is the music. We used this digipak as a model for our own digipak as we felt as it was from the indie genre and shared a theme of nature which we felt would run smoothly along with our music video.
The artist will also wear bold red lipstick which is conventional to the indie genre as it shows individuality and having the confidence to stand out and be different. Many artist from the indie genre will wear bold lipstick to stand out as they are known for their quirky style. The artist also wears minimal make up of subtle brown and earthy colours with provides the audience with naturalistic visuals. This will provide the audience with a relationship with the artist as she will remind them of a typical teenager and they will see her as a 'friend' they can relate to.
Black tights- The black tights give any outfit that the artist wears an edgy atmosphere showing that she is feminine however she is a strong personality and is not afraid to be different. The tights also cover the artist's legs showing she does not use sexuality to promote her music and her appearance is less important.
It is important to consider audience feedback as we are given constructive criticism in which we can reflect upon. As we still have the opportunity to make changes for our final music video we will take onboard the comments that we receive.
For example if we receive a message including constructive criticism such as the disliking of a certain shot or clip we will then take time to change the element of the music video in order for the final music video. It is also beneficial to receive compliments on the music video as we will then definitely plan to keep the elements that are liked. It is also important to consider the feedback of an audience as we will want to know if the video has reached our target audience. Our target audience was young females between the ages of 16-21 and we will be interested in whether or not we have met this intended audience. Furthermore by receiving positive feedback we will then gain confidence in our video and promote our video further in order to gain more publicity as we are sure that it has been received well and will hopefully continue to.
We received audience feedback through Youtube and also through asking the opinion of people within my media class and the public. Youtube is a very good way of receiving feedback as it has many pathways that the audience can communicate through. For example every view that the music video receives is counted and the overall number is presented. There is also an opportunity for the viewers to like and dislike the video which also shows a number of how many people are for and against the video. The ability to comment on the video will also give us an insight into how people have received the comments and their personal thoughts and feelings towards the music video. We also held a mini informal screening of our rough cut where our classmates and other people in our year watched the video and told us what they thought about the video. They gave us comments on the editing, cinematography , representation of the artist and how they received the video as a whole. We also posted the rough cut onto social networking sites such as Facebook and Twitter in order to gain more views and comments from the public.
The feedback we received proved to be mostly positive and constructive. We gained 123 views on youtube and 4 likes. We were very happy with the amount of views we received as it means that the video is getting round and being given the opportunity to be complimented.
We also received this constructive comment from a student who specialises in media completely and we were very grateful for this as once acted on the comment it was very beneficial to us. When we imported the final video we listened to the helpful comment and did export the video to H.264 and it was a great difference.
Blogger- this was used to hold all the research in which I had conducted and also all planning. Every aspect of the planning process was recorded on blogger and this was a great way to be evaluated by our teacher but also a good way to refer back to our previous work.
Youtube- Youtube is a very good way of receiving feedback as it has many pathways that the audience can communicate through. Youtube was also a way of researching music videos for posts such as 'chosen genre', 'chosen artist', 'history of music videos'. In order to gain information about the Indie genre I had to analyse music videos and youtube made this a very easy and accessible job to do.
iTunes- In order to get the music for our music video we had to purchase the song on ITunes. We searched the artist and the song, purchasing it for 69p. We could then transfer the onto our music video in order to make sure that particular shots would coincide with the right parts of the music.

Finding a digipak with 6 slides from an artist within the indie genre proved to be very difficult therefore we had to analyse a digipak of four slides from the artist Jack Johnson.
A digipak will need to represent the artist in order to gain success through sales.
This specific digipak by Jack Johnson shows the chilled and laid back atmosphere of the artist which is conventional of the indie genre. This is shown by the specific colours and designs. The colours predominately used are yellow and black which can suggest a vibrant yet melodic album. The colour yellow connotes optimism, happiness, hope and imagination.
Our digipak is conventional to the Indie genre due to the simplicity of the photographs, appearance of the artist and use of fonts and effects.
Some of the images that I have used for the digipak is a shot of the artist in a natural location of an autumn forest. The lighting is naturalistic as the sun is setting and reflecting on the artist creating a magical effect which represents the location as her 'thinking place' in which she reflects on her life and in this case her failing relationship. The bright colours of green, brown and yellows are very clear connoting a peaceful atmosphere which is conventional of the Indie genre as the music is generally laid back rather than that of rock and pop which are energetic.
Our artist has blonde hair that is messy and curly which follows the indie conventions as appearance is not vital within a music video within this genre.
The welcome page of the digipak contains a message from the artist thanking everyone who helped her in the process of making the video. She also says that the album is full of personal songs which will help the artist create a relationship with the audience as they will enjoy more emotive and personal songs. I chose to use a white italic font to also show a feminine and innocent side to the artist. The style of writing is also sophisticated as this dialogue is a mature message from the artist in order to thank the audience as well as the production team. The image used for the welcome pack shows the artist looking at the camera with enticing eyes showing a serious yet pretty face.
One of the images we have chosen to use for the digipak is one of the artist with a horse. This will give the artist the likeablity factor as she has time for animals and nature. I feel that both our ancillary products work well alongside our music video due to the running themes and extended metaphors that run throughout. The low budget settings such as the forest shows the nature theme that is evident in both the ancillary products and the music video. The artist in our music video is seen performing in the naturalistic setting of the forest with her guitar. This setting is then seen throughout the digipak. The artist's image also runs through the ancillary products as well as the music video. The artist will be seen in array of indie outfits depending on the location of scene and which emotion we anticipate to portray.
We have chosen to stick to having a female artist who dresses in vintage clothes with piercings and messy hair as this shows individuality and as our target audience is young females we want to influence in a positive way showing they should embrace individuality and not follow the crowd. - Gold and black ankle boots- The black and gold boots create a subtle gothic look showing that the artist s also edgy and confident within herself and her image. The boots are also comfortable shoes rather than heels showing the artist is not high maintenance and is down to earth making her likeable and relatable.
- Denim shirt- The denim shirt will be worn by the artist in the mid-shot performance scenes. This is a casual look showing the artist can relax, however in these scenes the artist is singing about her boyfriend and the issues she faces with them therefore her outfit is least important in these scenes.
- Red lipstick- The red lipstick that the artist wears shows passion and charisma.
This will attract the intended target audience as they will enjoy to listen to an artist who is seen as current.
It is important to consider audience feedback as we are given constructive criticism in which we can reflect upon. As we still have the opportunity to make changes for our final music video we will take onboard the comments that we receive.

"The video was really good. I believed the narrative and the settings and image of the characters really fitted with the Indie theme"
Aimee Clark , 18
"I really enjoyed it, A lot of time and effort went into the video and this is evident. I think their could be some more spent with matching up the timing and the miming of the artist."
Sam Cooper, 40
The feedback that we received assisted us greatly in the process of finalizing our music video as we took all the criticism on-board and made certain changed in order to have a very effective end product. We sorted out any timing issues that had been highlighted in the comments and also focused on any shots that looked unprofessional.
Any positive comments that we received we have kept these things as they were in the final video as they were received well by the audience.

Group Digipak
Group Digipak - Analayse
In order to share our digipaks to the rest of the group we printed out our digipak panels and passed them round the group therefore each member could have a detailed look at each digipak. As a group we discussed the pro's and con's of each members full digipak, taking ideas from each one and agreeing on certain pictures that we felt would be effective. We discussed elements such as images, fonts , colours, messages etc and chose options that would follow the conventions of the Indie genre.
Emmas Front cover
We chose to use Emma's front cover for our group digipak as we felt that it conformed to the conventions of the indie genre and will appeal to our target audience of girls between the ages of 16-21. The setting is simplistic which is stereotypical of the Indie genre as it is a low-budget setting of a forest. The artists image is also conventional due to the quirky style in which she adopts, wearing a floral dress showing feminism which would appeal to girls as they would relate to the fashion creating familiarity and a relationship between the audience and the artist. The artist also wears a jean jacket with red lipstick which gives edge to the artist's image creating a less innocent vibe which makes her more interesting and appealing.
This image also includes a guitar which is conventional to the Indie genre as artist's within this genre heavily rely on instruments within their music in order to show their passion for the sound and style rather than fame or merchandise.
The font is clear and simplistic which also can be identified as Indie as fonts of other genres such as dance and pop are usually quite loud and colourful. The positioning of font allows the font to be seen clearly however does not over power the picture of the artist.
Emma's and Daisy

We felt that this image of the artist and a horse was very conventional to the indie genre as it is very linked to nature and the simplistic beauty that the Indie genre adopts. The artist does not pose and shows her natural reaction to the horse therefore she can be seen as gentle and down to earth therefore adding to her likeability factor. The original picture included some dull colours therefore we edited it in order to conform to the indie genre.

Emma's and Daisy

These CD covers were both very effective and we felt that they would conform to the Indie genre. Emma's cd cover contains a brick wall which is evident within the rest of the digipak. The brick wall shows an urban simplistic low budget setting which is common of the indie genre. We chose to keep the brick wall and also use the flower from the middle of Daisy's cd cover. The flower is used continuously through the ancillary products which identifies the artist and it works as her mascot as her name is 'Daisy'. There is also a shoe string that is seen to follow the circumference of the cd which relates to the lyrics of the song being 'nose rings and shoestrings'. The idea of the shoe string is a good idea however we felt that as we could not find a shoestring that would sit nicely on the cd we chose to eliminate the shoestring. We felt that a combination of the two would be most suited as they both include vital and effective elements in which we would be happy to use for our final group digipak.
Our welcome note was inspired by Daisy's panel and my own. We both used the same picture which showed the artist holding a guitar which is conventional to the indie genre. Having a picture of the artist next to the welcome note will make the audience connect more and feel that the message is personal and directly from the artist. In comparison to my panel Daisy separated the image from the message showing the important of the message and its emphasis on this particular page. The changes we made included deleting the pink brush effect in the corner of the page. The colour pink is not conventional of the Indie genre and therefore we felt that it may have mislead the audience into thinking the artist was a mixture of other genres such as pop and dance as they generally use bright primary colours.
Group magazine advert
In order to share our magazine adverts to the rest of the group we printed them out and passed them round the group therefore each member could have a detailed look at each one. As a group we discussed the pro's and con's of each members full advert, taking ideas from each one and agreeing on certain pictures that we felt would be effective. We discussed elements such as images, fonts , colours, messages etc and chose options that would follow the conventions of the Indie genre.
Daisy's
Daisy's magazine advert is very conventional to the Indie genre through many elements. Firstly the image is of the artist in action of playing the guitar and singing. The guitar is very conventional of the indie genre and the fact that the artist is playing it shows her ability making her appealing to an audience. The artist wears a grey coat showing she is outside which refers to nature and how the artist is natural and has raw talent. The jacket in which the artist is wearing covers her body showing that she does not want to necessarily sell her appearance but more the music and her voice. The lighting in this picture is very effective as it shows a natural light which connotes modesty as the artist is not completely in the spotlight, this will increase her likability factor. The layout of the magazine advert is simple yet eye catching. The use of different fonts give a disjointed feel which could connote the mind set of the artist making the song more appealing as it shows the context of the song an the chaotic relationship she sings about. I do however feel that the colour pink does not flow with the rest of the ancillary pack and should be changed to an orange or a more neutral colour to coincide with the Indie genre.
Ella's
Ella's magazine advert is conventional to the Indie genre as the artist is seen to have a laid back image shown by her casual clothes. The denim shirt and red beanie hat show a quirky side to the artist showing her as individual which will appeal to a young audience as they will appreciate someone who is different. Her expression is friendly and excited which gives her the likability factor and also show her as relatable and normal. The font used is childlike which shows the youthful side of the artist, showing her fun and cheeky side which will make a younger audience more appreciative of the artist and her music. The simplicity of the magazine advert conforms to the indie genre. Have the image of the artist to the right of the magazine advert shows her importance however leaves room for the name of the artist and the name of the single. The strap of the artist's guitar is shown however by seeing the actual guitar I think that the advert would be more appealing to an Indie audience as instruments are very important and common amongst this genre.

The denim shirt and red beanie hat show a quirky side to the artist showing her as individual which will appeal to a young audience as they will appreciate someone who is different. The artist is also holding a guitar which is conventional to the indie genre as instruments are a central focus of the Indie genre as the music sounds within the genre usually come from instruments rather than music made on programmes such as garage band. This gives Indie music a raw and fresh vibe showing that an Indie artist is true to themselves and does not change for the stage such as artists within the pop genre.
I have included neutral colours to connote the fresh and real atmosphere, which is also the reason for the vast amount of daisy flowers. The flowers denote the name of the artist however the also symbolise purity, innocence, loyalty and patience. These qualities are all shown within the music video from the artist as she deals with her boyfriend who seems to be under the influence of alcohol and drugs. The different sizes of the Daisy's suggests how big or small the flower is it is still beautiful and this relates to the relationship within the music video as their relationship has many problems, big and small, however the artist never gives up trying to save it.
The artist is the central image of the advert showing her importance and making sure that the audience is drawn to her when flicking through a magazine. The artist also makes eye contact with the camera which will also grab the attention of an audience as a relationship is instantly created. the artist is also smiling sweetly therefore this will also create a relationship with the audience as she is portrayed as friendly and approachable therefore will be seen as likeable. I have used Goodwin's theory within my magazine advert as the visuals match the lyrics of the song. For example I have included a shoestring in the advert to link to the song title 'Nose rings and shoe strings'. The shoe string is red which depicts passion and anger which is representative of the chaotic relationship within the music video. The shoe string is also tied in a bow showing that the artist can make the simplest of things beautiful and appealing, which shows that she can save her boyfriend and make their relationship worthy. I do however think that my magazine advert may have too much going on which may take the attention away from the artist which could be a problem when it comes to sales.

Emma's
Emma's magazine advert is very conventional to the Indie genre. The image is of the artist Daisy with a guitar showing raw talent and great ability within the the music business. The artist is dressed in a denim jacket The denim shirt and red beanie hat show a quirky side to the artist showing her as individual which will appeal to a young audience as they will appreciate someone who is different. Emma has chosen to use a brick wall background, which each other member of the group have not. This is an element that we have taken from Emma's magazine advert for the group magazine advert as we felt it was a very effective background and really conformed to the Indie genre. It is a simplistic and urban setting which shows a contrast between the theme of nature that follows throughout the rest of the ancillary pack. The contrast shows the innocence of the artist whereas the brick wall shows the chaotic problems she endures. The text included is very persuasive and eye catching in order to entice the intended target audience. Emma has included to use the artist's name in big and bold letters in order to promote the artist, however the biggest font is used on the phrase 'out now' showing the availability showing that the single is in the reach of those who want to purchase. The phrase 'hot new single' also shows that the song has been received well and will encourage the audience to buy.
